Why You'll Love It

A bold, sculptural perennial that brings real structure to the garden, Globe Thistle (Echinops Ritro) produces perfectly spherical, steel blue flower heads atop silvery, stiff stems, set against deeply lobed, spiny grey-green foliage. Each plant produces multiple flower globes through summer into early autumn, and the blooms hold their colour beautifully when dried. Loved by bees, butterflies and other pollinators, it's also naturally resistant to deer and rabbits thanks to its spiny foliage.

Growing to around 60cm tall, it's a striking choice for the back of borders, cottage and prairie style plantings, gravel gardens and cutting beds, looking best planted in groups of three or more for real visual impact. Genuinely tough and low-maintenance, it loves hot and dry conditions; it thrives in full sun and average to poor, well-drained soil; in fact, rich soil and overfeeding can cause floppy, weak growth. Once established, it copes well with dry spells and needs little extra water.

Note: The foliage can be prickly to handle, so gloves are recommended when working around mature plants.
