Three Simple Things That Make All the Difference in Pots

Use Quality Potting Mix

Give your seeds the best start with a good-quality potting mix. It provides the drainage and nutrients they need, while garden soil can compact and drain poorly in pots.

Choose the Right Pot Size

Aim for at least 25cm of soil depth. And when it comes to width, bigger is better — more surface area means more room to sow and more blooms to enjoy.

Keep Your Pots Well Watered

Pots can dry out quickly, especially in warm weather. Check the soil daily and water when the top 2cm feels dry. Morning watering is best, giving your seeds the moisture they need.

Everything You Need to Know

No — garden soil can compact in containers and drain poorly, making it harder for seeds to germinate and establish. Always use a good-quality potting mix for containers. It’s lighter, drains better and provides the right conditions for healthy root growth and strong plants.

Each packet includes specific sowing and spacing guidance for that variety, so follow the recommended spacing for the best results. Avoid overcrowding, as seedlings need enough space, light, water and nutrients to grow well. If they emerge too densely, thin them out once they’re established.

Yes — drainage holes are essential. They allow excess water to escape and help prevent the potting mix from becoming waterlogged, which can cause root problems. Always choose a pot with drainage holes and make sure they remain clear so water can drain freely after watering.

Choose a pot that is at least 25cm deep to give your plants enough room for healthy root growth. Wider pots are even better — more surface area gives your seeds more room to spread and establish, allowing you to create a fuller display of blooms

Most varieties in our pot range need at least 4–6 hours of direct sunlight each day to grow and flower well. If your balcony is mostly shaded, flowering may be limited, but some varieties, such as Snapdragon and Nasturtium, can tolerate part shade reasonably well. Always check the individual product page for the specific sunlight requirements of each mix.
