Sow in autumn. Bloom all spring and summer.

Stronger roots, earlier blooms and a meadow that feeds the bees from spring.

Why Sow in Autumn?

Better Germination

Cooler weather and rainfall create ideal conditions for seeds.

Earlier, Longer Blooms

Autumn sowing sets the stage for a long-lasting spring and summer display.

Low Maintenance Growth

Established roots mean less watering and less worry during warmer weather.

A Head Start for Pollinators

Early blooms provide an essential food source when pollinators need it most.

How To Sow Your Seed Mix

  • Step 1: How Much Seed Do I Need?

Ordering the right amount ensures good coverage.

    • Use 2 grams of seed per square metre for most soils. Increase to 3 grams per sqm for poor or sandy soils

Tip: Too many seeds increase competition for growth and minimise the number of species that bloom, while too few create gaps — measure your space to get the balance right.

  • Step 2: Prepare the Soil

Good soil preparation is essential for a thriving meadow. Clear the area of grass, weeds, and debris using methods that suit your space:

    • Cover small areas with cardboard or tarps for a few weeks to smother weeds
    • Apply an organic herbicide such as Slasher Weedkiller or Weedmaster Argo, then remove dead weeds
    • Pull weeds and grass by hand for smaller patches (note: may regrow quickly, so monitor the area)
    • For larger areas, consider a sod cutter or rototiller
    • Take your time in this step — don’t rush!

Tip: Spread mushroom compost just before sowing to enrich the soil and give your seeds the best start.

  • Step 3: Sow Evenly

For the best coverage and germination:

    • Mix seeds with Grade 3 vermiculite to help germination
    • Spread the mixture evenly using a crosshatch pattern (half north–south, half east–west)
    • Gently press seeds into the soil — do not bury

Tip: Lay down cardboard or plywood and walk over larger areas to press seeds evenly into the soil — wildflower seeds need light to germinate.

  • Step 4: Protect and Water

A little TLC early on makes all the difference.

    • Lightly cover with sugarcane mulch to protect seeds from birds and animals and help retain moisture
    • Keep the soil consistently moist during germination

Tip: Monitor the area for weeds or grass, and only remove them if you’re certain — this helps prevent competition without disturbing your seedlings.

Got Questions About Our Seed Mixes?

The key is picking a mix that matches your soil. One of the biggest reasons meadows fail is that people choose seeds based on what they like, rather than their garden’s conditions. Our mixes are designed with soil type, sunlight, and other growing conditions in mind to give your meadow the best chance to bloom.

  1. Know your soil: Identify if it’s loamy, sandy, clay, or silty.
  2. Check your space: Note how much sun your patch gets — full sun, part shade, or somewhere in between.
  3. Choose your mix: Pick a mix suited to your soil and sun conditions. Make sure to read the product description, which highlights soil, sun, and other important notes to give your meadow the best chance to bloom.

Yes! To ensure success, wildflower seeds need a clear, clean, and healthy seedbed to take root and establish properly.

Wildflower meadows will not thrive if sown into existing grass, weeds, or other plants, as young seedlings cannot compete for sunlight, nutrients, and water. Simply scattering seeds over a lawn or weedy area usually results in poor germination and limited growth.

Proper soil preparation — creating bare, weed-free ground — is essential for strong establishment and long-term meadow success.

It depends on the size of the area you’re covering. We recommend 2–3 grams per square metre to ensure good flowering coverage and help inhibit weed growth. Please don’t exceed the recommended amount — more seeds don’t mean more flowers. Overcrowding can actually reduce flowering.
