Description

A striking dryland Australian native from South Australia and Western Australia, Alyogyne hakeifolia (Native Hibiscus or Desert Rose) brings finely textured, needle-like foliage and a long run of hibiscus-style blooms in mauve, blue or purple through summer and autumn.

This is a plant built for tough, dry conditions, not humidity. Once established, it copes well with drought, poor soil and lime, needing only minimal supplementary watering. It prefers a sunny, well-drained position with good air circulation away from humid spots and tolerates light to moderate frost.

Growing into an upright, multi-branched shrub around 2 to 3m tall, it suits native gardens, waterwise plantings, screening and feature spots, and its nectar-rich blooms are also great for pollinators, regularly drawing in bees and butterflies.

Planting Guide

Botanical Name: Alyogyne hakeifolia

Temperature: 18°C to 24°C

Plant Height: Up to 4metres

Sowing: Soak seed overnight in tepid water before sowing onto a free-draining seed-raising mix, covering lightly. Keep warm and consistently moist (not wet) until germination, which typically takes 2–4 weeks. Best sown in spring or autumn.

Note: Some native seeds like to take their time! They often stay dormant until conditions feel just right. Follow the pre-treatment and sowing tips provided, and don’t worry if germination takes a little longer; it’s all part of nature’s rhythm.
