Why You'll Love It
Forget the usual orange and yellow; California Poppy Red Chief brings silky, cup-shaped blooms in a striking, vivid red-orange with a dark centre, easily one of the boldest colours you'll find. Set against fine, blue-green feathery foliage, the flowers open wide in full sun and close again at dusk or on overcast days.
Forming a low, compact mound around 30cm tall, it's a strong choice for pots, borders, rockeries, containers and meadow-style plantings, and looks especially striking massed together or paired with the classic orange California Poppy. Genuinely easy to grow, it thrives in poor, dry, well-drained soil and full sun, tolerating drought and a wide range of soil types once established. Deadheading regularly will extend the flowering season.
A reliable favourite with bees and other pollinators, it self-seeds readily once established.
Please note: California Poppy may be invasive. To keep it contained to your garden, deadhead spent blooms regularly before they set seed. The plant can be harmful if eaten, so keep away from children and pets.
