Why You'll Love It
One of the most beautiful lavenders you can grow, Lavender Hidcote Blue produces deep violet-blue flower spikes above a neat, compact mound of silvery grey-green foliage. Darker and richer in colour than most English lavenders, it's the variety that inspired the famous gardens of Hidcote Manor, and remains one of the most sought-after lavenders for borders, edging and cutting.
Growing to around 30cm with a similar spread, it forms a dense, tidy evergreen shrub that suits pots, formal edging, rockeries, herb gardens, and cottage borders equally well. Flowers appear from late spring through summer, and the whole plant is intensely aromatic, both the flowers and foliage releasing that classic lavender scent when brushed or cut. It thrives in full sun and well-drained, slightly alkaline soil, and is genuinely drought-tolerant once established.
The flowers are loved by bees and butterflies, can be used in cooking and dried arrangements, and the essential oil is prized for its quality. Trim lightly after flowering each season to keep the plant compact and prevent it becoming woody.
