Why You'll Love It

A true cottage garden icon, Canterbury Bells (Campanula medium) brings vigorous, upright plants topped with large, cup-shaped flowers in shades of carmine rose, deep blue, pink and white. Strong stems hold the blooms well above the foliage, growing to a statuesque 80cm, making this single-flowered variety a standout at the back of a border or through the middle of a cottage bed.

This biennial forms a low rosette of leaves in its first year, then sends up its tall flowering stems and blooms the following spring into summer. It prefers full sun to part shade and rich, moist, well-drained soil, tolerates a wide range of soil types once established, and handles cooler conditions far better than extreme heat.

Equally at home in the garden or the vase, it's prized as a cut flower for its long-lasting display, and its bell-shaped blooms are a magnet for bees, butterflies, and even hummingbirds in gardens where they occur. Plant in groups for the best impact, and grow several together so the stems support one another in windy spots.
