Why You'll Love It

A fast-growing, tough Australian native built for life by the coast. Hibiscus tiliaceus, also called Cottonwood or Sea Hibiscus, shrugs off salt spray, sandy soil and exposed positions where most other trees struggle, making it a reliable choice for windbreaks, screening and shade in coastal gardens.

Heart-shaped green leaves form a dense canopy, topped through summer with large yellow blooms that fade through orange to burgundy before dropping, putting on a fresh colour show each day. Left to grow naturally, it reaches a small tree of around 10metres; pruned regularly, it works well as a hedge or screen instead. The open trumpet flowers also attract bees and butterflies, making it a useful addition to a pollinator-friendly garden.

Low maintenance once established, tolerant of poor soils, and happy on rainfall alone along the east coast. Handles light frost but prefers warm coastal climates.
