Why You'll Love It
One of Australia's most charming native wildflowers, the Australian/Sprawling Bluebell (Wahlenbergia gracilis) produces masses of delicate, bell-shaped blooms in a vivid soft blue, held on slender, airy stems above fine, narrow foliage. It's a plant that looks effortless in the garden because, frankly, it is.
A perennial that spreads naturally into tufted clumps via underground stems, it grows to around 30 to 60cm tall and suits a surprisingly wide range of conditions. Full sun to part shade, sandy or loamy or clay soils, wet forests to poor stony hillsides, it's one of the most adaptable native groundcovers available. Drought-tolerant and frost-hardy once established, it's a genuine set-and-forget plant in the right spot.
Flowering from spring through summer, the open bell-shaped blooms are a reliable favourite with bees and other native pollinators, and the plant has a long history of use by Aboriginal communities, with the petals historically eaten as food.
Perfect for native gardens, wildflower plantings, groundcover, rockeries and understorey plantings beneath established trees.
