Why You'll Love It
Lavandula angustifolia, known as True Lavender or English Lavender, is the species behind the world's most prized lavender essential oil, a softer, sweeter, more floral fragrance than French or Spanish types, and the one most used in aromatherapy, culinary and perfumery applications.
A compact, evergreen perennial shrub growing to around 70cm tall, it forms a neat, rounded mound of silvery grey-green foliage topped with slender spikes of purple flowers through summer. It thrives in full sun and well-drained, slightly alkaline soil, and is genuinely drought-tolerant once established. It suits borders, herb gardens, rock gardens, low hedging, containers and sensory gardens, and is one of the most reliable bee and butterfly attractors you can grow.
The flowers are highly aromatic both fresh and dried, and the dried flower heads are one of the most effective natural drawer sachets and moth deterrents available.
Please note that lavender seed is slow and can be erratic to germinate; patience is essential, and sowing more seed than you need is recommended.
