Why You'll Love It
Few flowers stop you in your tracks quite like a pincushion in full bloom. Pincushion Scabiosa atropurpurea produces frilly flower heads in a rich mix of lavender, pink, deep crimson, white, and salmon, each with a raised cushion centre and protruding stamens that give the blooms their distinctive, old-fashioned charm. Lightly honey-scented and held on long, wiry stems, it's one of the finest cutting flowers you can grow from seed.
Growing to around 80cm tall, it blooms prolifically from summer right through to the first frosts, and the more you cut, the more it flowers. A cottage garden favourite for centuries, it works equally well in borders, meadow-style plantings and dedicated cutting patches, and is an absolute magnet for butterflies, bees and hummingbirds.
It performs best in full sun and well-drained, slightly alkaline soil, and prefers cooler conditions, tending to slow down in the peak of summer heat and humidity before picking back up as temperatures ease. Deadhead regularly to keep the blooms coming.
Note: Some varieties of Scabiosa are listed as a weed in South Australia. Customers in SA should check local regulations before purchasing or planting.
