Why You'll Love It
A native wildflower with a bloom unlike anything else in the garden. Gomphrena canescens, known as Pink Billy Buttons or Bachelor's Buttons, produces perfectly spherical, papery flower heads in soft pink to dusty mauve, starting deep and fading gradually to a pale, romantic blush as they age. Set against narrow, softly hairy grey-green leaves on upright branching stems, it's a plant that looks just as good in a cutting garden as it does massed in a native border.
Growing to around 90cm tall, it flowers from summer through autumn and is a perennial in warmer tropical climates, though it is typically grown as an annual in cooler temperate zones. It thrives in full sun and well-drained soil and needs regular watering, particularly while establishing, as it's native to the higher rainfall regions of northern Australia and is not suited to dry or arid conditions.
Excellent as both a fresh and dried cut flower, the papery globes hold their shape and colour beautifully once dried, making it a favourite for dried bouquets and everlasting arrangements. Loved by bees and other pollinators.
